Ay-ay anime lovers! Netflix’s One Piece live-action adaptation may finally be back in production after more than a year-long COVID-19-induced hiatus. The series, originally announced in January 2020, is a live-action pirate adventure based on the bestselling manga by Eiichiro Oda. The show follows young Monkey D. Luffy as he begins a swashbuckling adventure to discover the “One Piece” treasure, which will transform him into the King of the Pirates. The manga was previously adapted into an extremely popular anime series of the same name that has been on air since 1999.
Showrunner Steven Maeda recently took to Instagram to share an update on the hibernating series, assuring fans the team “hasn’t stopped working.”
In the meantime, Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop live-action adaptation just wrapped production, so fans can still get an anime-reworking fix relatively soon. One Piece currently has no official release date.
The show’s code name “Project Roger” seen on the door could be a fun nod to Gol D. Roger, the Pirate King. While this image isn’t an outright announcement that the series is back up and running, it is a welcome update that assures fans the show isn’t dead.
