To get back home, Buzz and a team of engineers must find a way to make their ships travel fast enough to traverse great stretches of space. With each test flight to see if they’ve been successful, Buzz travels more slowly through time than those he leaves on the planet’s surface. For Buzz the tests take minutes, while years pass on the planet beneath him.
Friends and colleagues age and retire while new characters are introduced in brief clips between the flights. We can’t provide any more context than that without crossing into spoiler territory, but for those who have seen the movie, it’s clear why the cut scene didn’t make the final cut.
