Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film 2021 Coming May 4-9

“Wonderwomen – Women in Games & Animation” will explore the evolution that has occurred for women in animation; a topic first discussed at ITFS 25 years ago at a program curated by Jayne Pilling. The discussion will explore new emerging artistic positions and opportunities for women and the role they play in the gaming industry. Waltraud Grausgruber, Gerben Schermer, Stephan Schwingeler and Judith Ackermann will curate.

• Free live streaming is planned on the event’s online platform bringing the Festival atmosphere on Schlossplatz to the web. Free programming for families, children and film enthusiasts completes the online festival.
• Fee-based ONLINE+ access, will offer live streams or on-demand viewing of current competition films and supporting programs. Filmmaker’s personal statements provide insights into the ideas and stories behind the films.
• In addition to onsite school and studio presentations ONLINE PRO will offer professionals the chance to participate online in live workshops and presentations by renowned studios. The fee-based access includes the entire ONLINE+ film program.

ITFS will also focus on France as a partner country which has developed a diverse and successful animation scene, especially in the last thirty years. Selected filmmakers, studios and universities will present themselves and celebrate French animation.
This year, the 2021 Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film (ITFS), will kick-off its first hybrid event, running May 4-9. The festival will take place onsite at various venues; it will also feature an extensive online program. ITFS Hybrid will offer a close Integration of both programs with ticket options appropriate for any audience.

The planned onsite events, subject to change as dictated by future pandemic restrictions, include cinema screenings and events such as workshops and presentations. Part of the GameZone, including the games exhibition “Wonderwomen – Women in Games & Animation” and GameZone Kids are scheduled to take place onsite with supplementary online activities offered in the free section of ITFS Hybrid. Most of the ITFS 2020 competition entries, that screened exclusively online in 2020, will be screened in cinemas in 2021.

“Creating*Diversity,” is the motto for ITFS 2021. The motto explores the idea that artistic media, such as animation and games, can not only be representative of diversity in aesthetic, but it can be used as a tool to create it – from conception to production and distribution.
